Canton Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Incident

Update (July 26, 2024):

     The Canton Police Department regretfully announces that the victim, Jeffery Buchanan, 58 years old of Canton, Georgia, succumbed to his injuries on July 25, 2024.

     We acknowledge and extend our gratitude to the civilian who stopped to render aid at the scene. Your assistance is greatly appreciated by both the community and the Canton Police Department.

     As a result of the ongoing investigation, McKinley Hunter now faces additional charges:
OCGA 40-6-393: Homicide by Vehicle 1st Degree
OCGA 40-6-391: DUI
OCGA 40-6-253: Open Container

Initial Release (July 23, 2024):

 
    On Monday, July 22, 2024, at approximately 1:51 PM, Canton Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of 1100 Reinhardt College Parkway following reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near the eastbound lanes. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive, unidentified white male lying on the eastbound roadway. Officers immediately administered CPR and utilized an AED until EMS arrived on the scene. The injured male was subsequently transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for further treatment.


    Canton Investigators, with the assistance of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, quickly located the vehicle involved in the incident, along with the suspect, McKinley Hunter, 23, at his residence in Canton. McKinley Hunter was arrested and is currently being held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. He faces charges of distracted driving (OCG 40-6-241) and hit and run (OCG 40-6-270) resulting in serious injury.

    The victim, a 58-year-old male from Canton, remains at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries.
